YouTube widget
Keep up with the channels you follow on your new tab. The YouTube widget shows the latest videos from channels you add, and lets you save any video to a personal favorites list that never disappears.
It uses each channel's free public feed, so there's no YouTube login, no API key, and no setup beyond pasting a channel link.
Add a channel
- Open Settings → YouTube.
- Paste a channel into the box. Any of these work:
- The channel's handle, like
@veritasium - The channel page link, like
https://www.youtube.com/@veritasium - A link with
/channel/UC…in it
- The channel's handle, like
- Click Add. The first time, your browser asks permission to read web feeds. Click Allow so the widget can fetch videos.
- The channel appears in your list. Repeat for everyone you follow.
To stop following a channel, click the × next to it.
Tip: the easiest handle to grab is the one shown under any of the creator's videos. It looks like
@name.
Watch & save videos
Turn the widget on in Settings → Select Dashboard Widgets, then open a new tab.
- Latest tab: videos from all your channels, mixed together, newest first. Click a video to open it on YouTube (so you get full size, your account, and Premium if you have it).
- Channel menu: pick a single channel from the dropdown to see only its videos.
- Save (☆): click the star on any video to keep it. It moves to your Saved tab and stays there forever, even after it drops out of the channel's recent list.
- Saved tab: your kept videos. Click the star again to remove one.
Your saved videos are stored in your private brain, so they sync and back up with the rest of your data.
Hiding Shorts
By default the widget shows only full videos and hides Shorts. To change this:
- Settings → YouTube.
- Toggle "Hide Shorts — show only full videos."
The first time a new video loads, a Short may flash for a second before it's filtered out. After that it's remembered and filtered instantly.
Troubleshooting
- "No recent videos from [channel]" but you know there are videos:
- Make sure you fully reloaded the extension after any update
(
chrome://extensions→ reload), then remove and re-add that channel. - Test the channel's feed directly: open
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UC…(use the channel's ID) in your browser. If it shows a list of videos, the widget will too. If it shows an error, YouTube's feed for that specific channel is unavailable. The widget cannot fix an unavailable feed.
- Make sure you fully reloaded the extension after any update
(
- A channel won't add by @handle: paste the
/channel/UC…link instead, or the rawUC…ID (find it via the channel page → View Source → searchchannelId). - Videos won't load at all: confirm you clicked Allow for feed access (Settings → YouTube will re-ask if needed).
Good to know
- Watching happens on YouTube in a new tab, not inside the small widget, so you get full controls, history, and ad-free if you're a Premium member.
- The widget shows roughly the latest ~15 videos per channel. Anything older you want to keep, save it. Saved entries do not expire.
