Set up the BGTP plug-in
One local program, registered a different way in each AI app. It runs on your Mac. This site never stores your key.
The full steps are on the BGTP page. Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, the Perplexity Mac app, and Grok Bot each have a panel with steps numbered 1 to 11. Open the panel for the app you use and follow it top to bottom. You never need to read the others.
This article is the short version, so you know what you are getting into first.
Before you start
- A Mac. The paths and app steps assume macOS.
- Node 20 or newer. Open Terminal and run
node -v. If it prints nothing, or a number below 20, install Node from nodejs.org first. - A serial. Create one in Mission Control using the Chrome extension or the Mac app. See Getting a serial below.
- About five minutes.
The shape of it
- Download
bgtp-map.zipfrom the BGTP page. - Unzip and install. Four lines in Terminal put the server at
~/bgtp-mcp/server.mjsand install the two libraries it needs. Thenpm installline is required because the libraries are not in the archive, and without them your AI app cannot start the server. - Register it with your AI app. Claude Desktop and Cursor take a small block of JSON. Claude Code is one Terminal line. Perplexity and Grok Bot take a command and an argument in their own settings.
- Restart the app (Claude Code needs no restart).
- Load your key, then engage. See Using BGTP day to day.
Every config file wants the full path
/Users/YOURNAME/bgtp-mcp/server.mjs. ReplaceYOURNAMEwith your Mac short username. Runwhoamiin Terminal to see it. Config files do not expand~, which is why the long form is required there.
Getting a serial
Mint one in Mission Control or the Mac app, then bring it into the assistant one of two ways:
Before sharing: both methods send the full serial to a hosted assistant's provider, even while the BGTP filter is off. A serial can include belief responses and, when present, birth date, sex, country, and postal code. The provider may retain the message or attachment in the conversation. Only continue if you accept sharing those details. This loading method is not local-only.
- Copy and paste the serial into your first message, or
- Export .bgp and drop that file into the prompt, then say
load.
There is no serial-upload form on this site, and no separate BGTP login. There is also no BGTP account to create. The plug-in stores a local copy. Deleting that copy or turning the filter off does not erase the serial from the hosted chat.
Which apps this works in
Works: Claude Desktop (Mac), Claude Code, Cursor, Perplexity Mac app, Grok Bot.
Does not work: claude.ai in a browser, ChatGPT, Perplexity.com, Grok on X. They cannot run a local file.
Each machine has its own install and its own on/off switch. Setting it up on your laptop does nothing for your desktop.
