Backup & restore
Your data lives on your device, so keep a copy. Everything here is in Settings → Data.
Automatic weekly backup
Once a week, BGP saves a full backup of settings and all your content to your
Downloads folder, named like bgp-full-backup-2026-09-07-auto.json. It protects you
from accidents like clearing browser data. Turn it on or off under Automatic backup.
Tip: point your Downloads at a folder that iCloud, Drive or Dropbox syncs, and your backups are off-site for free.
Manual full backup & restore
- Download full backup saves one file with everything.
- Restore from backup… lets you pick a backup file to load.
Restore is safe and additive: it merges into what you have and never deletes. Running it twice changes nothing the second time. You'll see a green ✓ (done) or a red ✗ with the reason.
Encrypted cloud backup (your own Google Drive)
A copy of your settings and memories in a "BGP Backups" folder in your Drive, encrypted on your device before upload, so Google only holds an unreadable file.
- Encrypted cloud backup → choose a backup passphrase. Don't use your Google password. BGP never stores it, and you will need it to restore the backup.
- Back up to Drive. Google asks permission for BGP to manage only the files it creates.
- Elsewhere: Restore from Drive… with the same passphrase.
If you also use Full private sync, that already keeps an encrypted copy in Drive. Cloud backup is a separate snapshot.
Settings only
Export settings as JSON / Import settings JSON… moves your preferences (theme, layout, widget choices) without your content.
Starting over
- Reset dashboard layout puts the widgets back in their default arrangement.
- Reset all settings + widget data wipes everything on this device. Back up first. The next new tab starts fresh, with the sample content.
Good to know
- Backups include your Belief Genome and Memories.
- Lost the cloud backup passphrase? That file can't be opened, by design. Your local data is unaffected. Make a new backup.
